Problem with TCP auto-tuning in Vista

In documenting the various Project54 research efforts I upload many pictures to my Flickr account and many videos to my YouTube account. However, for the past few weeks I’ve had problems connecting to Flickr and to YouTube. Basically, I’d attempt to upload files and the operation would fail. Small pictures would suffer the same fate as large videos - they wouldn’t make it to the destination.

I mentioned this problem to Frank Hludik and he found the problem: it was the TCP auto-tuning that my Vista machine performed. Here is a longer article describing the problem and the solution, and here is a shorter one. The bottom line for me: I disabled TCP auto-tuning and now I can upload pictures and videos. Thanks Frank!

MSDNAA Access

As part of being a MSP( Microsoft Student Partner) i was able to get grants for the IEEE, Project54 and the ECE department at the University of New Hampshire. The MSDNAA is free for three years and gives access to all students and faculty to almost all of Microsoft products except for Word. Some thats included are Visual Studio, Visio, Vista and XP. MSDNAA freely accessible for anyone using it for eduaction or research purposes. If there are any other educational departments or research groups who would like to try MSDNAA for free for three years please contact me.

Using HP Deskjet duplexing with Windows Vista

I have an HP Deskjet 6540 with a duplexer unit. When I upgraded my computer to Vista I could not use the duplexer. There was no way to select double-sided printing in programs such as Word and Acrobat. This problem can be fixed by going to Printers in the Control Panel, right-clicking on the HP printer, and selecting Properties. In Properties, go to the Device Settings pane and select Installed for Duplex Unit.

However, if Vista doesn’t recognize you as the owner of the printer (that is the user who has rights to administer it), this option will be grayed out. Interstingly, this can happen even if you’re logged in as an administrator (yes, this would be a bug). This is what happened to me when I reinstalled Vista (indexing stopped working - I’ll have another post on this subject soon). After reinstalling Vista, I was back to not being able to use double-sided printing. I tried to select Installed as explained above, but this option was not selectable. To fix this problem I first unplugged the printer. Next, I deleted it from the Printers list in Control Panel. Finally, I plugged it back in, which reinstalled the drivers. Once this happened, Vista allowed me to administer the printer and I could select the Installed option for the duplexing unit.

Installing SPSS under Vista

As it turns out, you may run into a couple of obstacles when installing SPSS under Vista. I certainly did. First, when I ran the installation program I got an “internal error 2738,” which a website told me was due to a problem with the VBScript DLL. When I tried to use regsvr32 to register this DLL I got the unhelpful “DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0×80004005.” It turns out that this is also discussed at the bottom of the same website. The key is to run regsvr32 from a command prompt with Administrator priviledges. Here is a post from My Digital Life on how you can open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. This website also gives a little more general overview of error code 0×80004005 when running regsvr32.
